Elective Surgeries

Spaying

Spaying involves the surgical removal of both ovaries and the uterus. Spays are performed under a full general anesthetic and follow our anesthetic protocol, listed above. We recommend spaying your pet at the age of six months. The benefits of spaying include the following:

  • Reduces canine and feline overpopulation
  • Reduces the urge to roam
  • Prevents pyometra (infection of the uterus), which can be life threatening
  • Reduces the chance of mammary cancer (if performed before the animal reaches sexual maturity)
  • Eliminates messy heat cycles in female dogs.

Neutering

Neutering involves the surgical removal of both testicles in a male dog or cat. Neuters are performed under a full general anesthetic and follow our anesthetic protocol, listed above. We recommend neutering your pet at six months of age. The benefits of spaying include the following:

  • Reduces canine and feline overpopulation
  • Reduces unwanted male behaviour such as wandering, aggression and spraying in male cats
  • Reduces or prevents the chance of prostate disease, testicular cancer, and perianal tumours.

Other Surgeries

Soft Tissue Surgery

Any surgery not concerning the bone is considered a soft tissue surgery. Our doctors regularly perform soft tissue surgeries on our patients to alleviate pain or prevent life threatening medical conditions. All soft tissue surgeries are performed under a full general anesthetic and follow our anesthetic protocol, listed above. Perhaps the most common type of soft tissue surgery is the removal of a lump/mass from an animal. Many of these lumps are benign (not cancerous) however early detection and removal provide the best outcome for your pet if they are malignant (cancerous).

Another common surgery is wound repair. Animals occasionally suffer lacerations or various types of wounds, and some of these may need surgery to close the area and prevent infection.

Abdominal Surgery

The most common abdominal surgeries performed are to collect biopsies or to remove foreign objects. There are many other frequently performed surgeries of the abdomen, such as:

    • Cystotomy: The removal of stones in the bladder, thus alleviating a blockage and allowing the patient to urinate without pain.

    • Splenectomy: The removal of a spleen that has been affect by disease or suspect masses.

  • Bloat: Also known as "Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus", this is a life threatening condition and immediate medical intervention is required to prevent a very painful death in as little as several hours.

Eye Surgery

We also perform surgeries to repair conditions of the eye, such as correction of Cherry eye, entropian or ectropian eyelids or a full enuculation (removal of the eye) if needed.
